Anxiety can feel difficult to control. Understanding its patterns helps.

Anxiety may appear as worry, tension, racing thoughts, uneasiness or a need to anticipate what could go wrong. This page explores how anxiety may operate—and how therapy may help you respond with greater awareness and choice.

Anxiety at a glance

One experience. Several possible expressions.

Thoughts

Worry, predictions, overthinking and difficulty switching off.

BODY

Tension, restlessness, uneasiness or feeling continually alert.

Behavior

Avoiding, checking, preparing, controlling or seeking reassurance.

Relationships

Concern about reactions, approval, conflict, rejection or uncertainty.

01

You understand the worry logically, but the response continues.

Not always immediately recognizable

Anxiety does not always look anxious.

Sometimes anxiety is obvious. At other times it may appear through habits that seem responsible, careful or helpful on the surface.

The mind tries to prepare for every possibility.

Planning can be useful. It may become exhausting when the mind repeatedly searches for certainty that no amount of preparation can provide.

Over-preparing

Postponing decisions, conversations or situations that feel unpredictable.

Seeking reassurance

Needing repeated confirmation before feeling able to proceed.

Avoiding uncertainty

Are choices influenced by approval, uncertainty, rejection or the need to prove something?

Difficulty resting

Feeling unproductive, exposed or uneasy when there is nothing to solve.

How the experience may repeat

The anxiety cycle can become self-reinforcing.

The cycle isn't identical for everyone, but recognizing its sequence can make the experience easier to understand.

1

Something feels uncertain

A situation, thought, memory, decision or anticipated event becomes active.

2

The mind predicts

Attention moves towards possible danger, rejection, failure or loss of control.

3

The body responds

Tension, alertness, uneasiness or other stress-related sensations may increase.

4

A protective action follows

Avoiding, checking, controlling or seeking reassurance may bring relief.

5

The pattern is reinforced

Temporary relief may make the same protective response more likely next time.

Therapeutic work may begin by identifying where greater awareness and different choices can enter this familiar sequence.

Beyond the visible difficulty

The anxious feeling may be only one part of the pattern.

Trying to control or suppress anxiety may bring temporary relief. Therapy can also explore the beliefs, expectations and protective responses that become active when something feels uncertain or threatening.

The Survival Operating System may provide a reflective lens for examining how familiar responses to safety, approval, uncertainty or belonging continue to influence present-day situations.

“What familiar survival pattern may be operating through this response?”

Lawrence Fernandes’s Survival Operating System offers a reflective lens for exploring recurring patterns that may influence anxiety. It supports deeper understanding while recognizing that every person’s experience is individual and may be shaped by more than one factor.

Visible experience

Worry, tension, uneasiness or avoidance

Repeated inner response

Repetitive thoughts, self-talk, and anticipated outcomes

Protective strategy

Seeking certainty, control, approval or safety

Possible survival pattern

A familiar response that may continue automatically

Questions beneath the symptom

Three areas will help you open a deeper exploration.

These are not tests or labels. They are starting points for understanding how anxiety may be organized in your experience.

01

What feels unsafe?

What possibility, reaction or outcome does the mind repeatedly try to prevent?

02

What must be controlled?

Where does uncertainty become difficult enough that reassurance, preparation or avoidance takes over?

03

What is being protected?

Could the response be protecting approval, belonging, competence, identity or a sense of stability?

Viewed through the Survival Operating System, anxiety may arise when the future feels uncertain and the Survival Mechanism struggles to find a familiar response that restores a sense of safety or control.

Therapeutic work may begin by identifying where greater awareness and different choices can enter this familiar sequence.

From understanding to therapeutic work

Therapy will help you recognise the pattern and develop different responses.

The approach is collaborative and tailored to your needs, preferences, and comfort, rather than following a single fixed method for everyone.

The methods used vary according to the individual. Hypnotherapy may be included where appropriate, while the pace and direction of therapy are guided by each person’s needs, comfort, and progress.

When to consider support

You do not have to wait until anxiety becomes overwhelming.

A first conversation may be useful when anxiety is repeatedly affecting your decisions, relationships, sleep, confidence, work, or ability to enjoy daily life.

01

Avoidance or reassurance provides only temporary relief.

02

Tension, restlessness, uneasiness or feeling continually alert.

03

The same anxious pattern appears across different situations.

04

You want to change yourself—not simply suppress a symptom.

What happens during the first consultation?

The first conversation is an opportunity to discuss what troubles you, what you hope to change, and whether this therapeutic approach may suit you.

Will hypnotherapy always be used?

No. The methods used depend on your needs, preferences and comfort. Hypnotherapy is one possible part of the integrative approach.

Will I remain in control during hypnotherapy?

Yes. Hypnotherapy is a collaborative, focused process. You remain aware and can pause or stop the process at any time.

How many sessions might I need?

The number of sessions varies according to the individual, the concern being explored, and the progress made. We can discuss this during the first consultation.

Are online sessions available?

Yes. Private online sessions are available for clients who prefer remote access or cannot attend in Mumbai.

How do I book a consultation?

Use the Book a Consultation button or the Contact page to send an inquiry. You may call us or WhatsApp us. We can then discuss the next steps with you.
