Depression can make life feel distant. Understanding the pattern may be a place to begin.

Depression may be experienced as persistent sadness, emptiness, loss of interest, reduced energy, withdrawal, or a growing sense that nothing will change.

Therapy offers a private space to explore what you are experiencing, what may be keeping it active, and how a different way forward may gradually become possible.

Depression at a glance

One experience. Several possible expressions.

Thoughts

Hopelessness, self-criticism, indecision or difficulty concentrating.

BODY

Sadness, emptiness, numbness, irritability, or feeling disconnected.

Behavior

Reduced energy, changes in sleep or appetite, restlessness, or fatigue.

Relationships

Withdrawal, postponing tasks, reduced routines, or losing interest in activities.

NOT ALWAYS IMMEDIATELY RECOGNIZABLE

Depression does not always look like sadness.

Sometimes anxiety is obvious. At other times it may appear through habits that seem responsible, careful or helpful on the surface.

Life may continue on the outside while engagement quietly reduces within.

A person may keep functioning while ordinary activities require more effort. Pleasure, motivation, and emotional involvement may gradually become harder to access.

Loss of interest

Activities, relationships or goals that once felt meaningful may no longer create the same involvement or pleasure.

Emotional numbness

Rather than feeling visibly sad, a person may feel empty, flat, disconnected, or unable to respond emotionally.

Irritability

Depression may sometimes appear through impatience, frustration, anger, or reduced tolerance rather than sadness.

Self-criticism

Mistakes, difficulties, or delays may be interpreted as evidence of personal inadequacy or failure.

HOW THE EXPERIENCE MAY CONTINUE

Depression can develop into a self-reinforcing cycle.

The cycle isn't the same for everyone. Recognizing its possible sequence may help reveal where therapeutic exploration and different choices can begin.

1

Something feels lost, unresolved, or beyond influence

A setback, disappointment, conflict, prolonged pressure, or repeated unmet expectations may become active.

2

The mind forms a discouraging conclusion

Thoughts may move towards helplessness, self-blame, worthlessness, or the expectation that nothing will improve.

3

Energy and initiative reduce

Starting tasks, making decisions, communicating or maintaining ordinary routines may require increasing effort.

4

Withdrawal provides temporary protection

Pulling away may reduce pressure, conflict, disappointment or the demand to keep trying.

5

Hopelessness becomes stronger

Reduced activity, connection, and positive experience may reinforce the belief that change is no longer possible.

Therapeutic work may begin by identifying where awareness, support, and manageable action can enter this familiar sequence.

THE FEELING MAY BE VISIBLE. THE PATTERN MAY NOT BE.

The loss of energy or hope may be only one part of the pattern.

Trying to force motivation or think positively may not address what is operating beneath the experience.

Therapy can explore the conclusions, expectations, emotional responses, and protective strategies that have become active—especially when continued effort feels pointless, disappointing, or beyond personal control.

Viewed through the Survival Operating System (SOS), depression may sometimes reflect a point at which the Survival Mechanism no longer recognizes a familiar or workable way forward. Reduced initiative, withdrawal or hopelessness may then become part of the continuing response.

“What familiar survival pattern may be operating through this withdrawal, helplessness, or loss of hope?”

Visible experience

Sadness, emptiness, fatigue, numbness or withdrawal

Repeated inner response

Self-critical conclusions, hopelessnes, and reduced expectations

Protective strategy

Disengaging, postponing, or withdrawing from further disappointment

Possible survival pattern

A familiar response that may continue automatically when no workable way forward is recognized

Questions beneath the symptom

Three areas may open a deeper exploration.

These questions are not tests or labels. They are starting points for understanding how the experience may be organized and maintained.

01

What has become difficult to hope for?

Has a repeated disappointment, loss or unmet expectation created the conclusion that further effort will not make a difference?

02

What conclusion is being repeated?

What does the mind repeatedly say about you, your abilities, other people or the possibility of change?

03

What might withdrawal be protecting you from?

Could disengagement be reducing exposure to pressure, rejection, conflict, failure or further disappointment?

From understanding to therapeutic work

Therapy can help you understand the pattern and make new decisions.

The therapeutic approach is tailored to your experience, needs, and comfort, rather than following a one-size-fits-all method.

01

Clarify your experience

Explore when the difficulty began, how it affects daily life, and what you would like to understand or change.

02

Recognize the pattern

Notice recurring conclusions, emotional responses, expectations, behaviors, and protective strategies.

03

Work therapeutically

NLP, reflective exploration and Clinical or Ericksonian Hypnotherapy may be used to explore beliefs, internal language, automatic responses and personal resources.

04

Reconnect with decisions and actions

Therapy may support the development of manageable responses that increase involvement, communication, initiative and a sense of personal influence.

The methods used vary according to the individual. Hypnotherapy may be included where appropriate, while the pace and direction of therapy are guided by each person’s needs, comfort and progress.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WAIT

Consider seeking support when life is becoming increasingly difficult to engage with.

A first conversation may be useful when low mood, loss of interest, withdrawal or reduced energy repeatedly affects your work, relationships, decisions, routines or ability to experience pleasure.

01

Low mood, emptiness or numbness continues rather than passing.

02

Activities and relationships that once mattered no longer feel engaging.

03

Ordinary tasks increasingly require more effort or are repeatedly postponed.

04

Self-critical or hopeless thoughts continue despite attempts to reason with them.

BEFORE YOUR FIRST CONVERSATION

Questions about depression therapy.

Is depression the same as feeling sad?

No. Sadness may arise in response to a particular event and often changes with time. Depression may involve a more persistent combination of low mood, loss of interest, reduced energy, hopelessness, withdrawal and difficulty managing daily life.

Can I attend therapy if I am taking medication or consulting a psychiatrist?

Yes. Psychological therapy may be used alongside appropriate medical or psychiatric care. Do not stop or change medication without consulting the professional who prescribed it.

Will hypnotherapy always be used?

No. The therapeutic methods used depend on your needs, preferences, and comfort. Hypnotherapy is one possible part of the integrative approach.

Will I remain in control during hypnotherapy?

Clinical and Ericksonian Hypnotherapy use focused, relaxed attention. You remain aware and can communicate throughout the process.

How many sessions might I need?

The number of sessions varies according to the individual, the concern being explored, and the progress made. We can discuss this during the first consultation.

Are online sessions available?

Yes. Private online sessions are available for clients who prefer remote access or cannot attend in Mumbai.

How do I book a consultation?

Use the Book a Consultation button or the Contact page to send an inquiry. You may call us or WhatsApp us. We can then discuss the next steps with you.

Depression may involve interacting social, psychological, and biological factors. The Survival Operating System (SOS) provides one reflective lens for exploring recurring patterns and may be used alongside appropriate psychological, medical, or psychiatric care.

A private place to begin

The way forward may not yet be visible. It can still be explored.
